I certainly feel that in consumer technology products or even regular day-to-day products, simplicity is a key element. Know what people want to use the product for and design taking that into account. And then I see this “smartwatch” from HP and I wonder whether they have gone too far?
It certainly feels closer to a feature watch than a smartwatch. It is a good looking watch that can alert you to a few additional things, emails, the weather, stocks, etc.
The market for smartwatches is young and I think that it is perhaps too early to have a good grasp on the consumer needs this product is meant to meet. However, not sticking in any sensors in a world where the Internet of Things, the quantified self or e-Health (or whatever you want to call it) are such hot topics, is a daring exercise o simplification.
I am very curious how this product will do. I reckon it is a first in a series of new products, but I don’t anticipate this being a big success. At the same time, I applaud HP for trying this, as it is a potentially new category.
